Santorum for President of what?

Penn Hills used to be a a Pittsburgh suburb that was filled with neat little houses with yards full of flowers, shrubs and middle class, academically achieving children. The houses were built to meet the demands of war weary former GI’s who, in the early 1950’s, were busy producing many baby-boomer offspring. When we fast forward to the 1980’s, this idyllic suburb was starting to look a little rough around the edges. Many of the original residents who remained, grew alarmed when they looked around, and so they packed up and fled to whiter pastures.

Let’s fast forward again, this time to the first decade of the 21st century. By 2009, many of the Penn Hills schools were in their 3rd year of Corrective Action Plans due to poor academic achievement. In 2008, Penn Hills was ranked 447th out of 498 PA school districts, according to the Pittsburg business times. Poverty had depleted the district’s coffers.

Rick Santorum and his large brood of children were living in a $700,000+ home in an upscale Virginia suburb. Not wanting to taint the children with public school secularism, he and his wife kept them at home and provided their five school aged students with a cyber school education. There is only one thing wrong with this mom and apple pie vision; Mr. Santorum was claiming that he lived in the modest Penn Hills home, for which he was in actuality a landlord. He was making Penn Hills pay for his children’s education. The bill came to $72,000 for the two years the school district paid the state, until it found out that Mr. Santorum didn’t live on the premises. In November, 2004, the district demanded payment. Mr. Santorum promptly withdrew his children from the cyber school rather than footing the bill himself, and chose instead to have the children homeschooled. He also insisted that he didn’t owe this back tuition. Now one could possibly believe that an uneducated man may not understand that if you don’t live in a certain school district, you can’t bill said school district for the education of your children. But, in late 2004, when this occurred, Mr. Santorum was a Dickenson law school graduate and seemingly intelligent enough to comprehend the complexities that everyone else seems to be able to grasp; if your kids aren’t living in the district, you can’t charge the district for their education.

Did it not enter his narrow mind that Penn Hills might have been able to alleviate the educational underachievement that is caused by poverty, by using the $72,000 for a program or two that would have remediated some of the academic deficits of the students who actually did live in the district? Is Mr. Santorum merely a cheapskate who wanted to get away with educating his children at the expense of the kids who lived in poverty in Penn Hills?

Now Mr. Santorum is running for the office of the president of the United States, not that anyone cares beyond his die hard social conservative anti everything crowd (gay rights, social security, etc.). He leaves us scratching our heads when he says wacky things such as claiming that the eventual shortfall of the social security system is due to abortion. Figure that one out. Or how about the knee slapper where he said John McCain, former prisoner of war, didn’t understand torture? I’m sure the American people will have the basic good sense to keep Mr. Santorum far away from an office that he couldn’t begin to deserve.

  1. Terrific Blog! I had no idea he had done something so underhanded.

    • Yes, Everyone who hails from the Pittsburgh area knows this story, and how it is especially depressing that he did this to to such a down-on-it’s-luck school district like Penn Hills.

  2. Great article. I will keep it in mind when I hear his name, I will warn others. Thanks.

    • Hopefully, he will disappear before too long. He has to know he has no chance to be the presendential nominee. I figure he is just a “vanity” candidate who is running in order to generate more interest in his books and his law practice.

    • Since you are a female from Philadelphia, I know you are a lefty-liberal yourself, young lady. You are probably also one of those feminatzis that Rush Limbaugh likes to talk about.

  3. Lovely example of family values. Thanks for sharing with everyone what a hypocrite he is.

    • Glad you liked it, Marie J. Hope you visit here again as there will be lots more I can complain about. Maybe, once in a great while, I will also have something to rave about instead of always ranting!
